When you use one of the many bridges, tunnels, or locks in the Netherlands, you assume they are safe, available, and well-maintained. In fact, you probably don't even think about it, driving across the bridge lost in thought. And that's a good thing. It means the people at Rijkswaterstaat have done their job well. They frequently consider the availability and safety of these assets. They manage and maintain them daily, ensuring they perform as expected. Delta Pi supports Rijkswaterstaat in developing performance-driven maintenance plans. In this case study, we explain exactly what we do.
Maintenance strategies
Delta Pi consultants are frequently consulted by Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management). As trainers, we guide asset managers and technical experts in developing performance-driven maintenance plans (P-IHPs). These P-IHPs determine an asset's potential performance. A P-IHP outlines the required maintenance (including costs) for the coming years. The information in the P-IHPs plays a key role in Rijkswaterstaat's approach to increasingly outsource maintenance based on performance agreements with market participants. Thanks to the guidance provided by Delta Pi, Rijkswaterstaat employees can now develop and implement P-IHPs themselves. This provides greater insight into the consequences of the chosen maintenance strategies and the budget required for them.

Delta Pi Training Material
Delta Pi has developed training materials to support RWS employees. These materials consist of standard building blocks:
- The first part of the training explains Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) methods and techniques. These methods and techniques enable RWS to provide a structured explanation of why, how, and when installations should be maintained, and which maintenance activities are involved.
- In the second part of the training, we teach RWS employees how to model their asset maintenance themselves using various tools. Delta Pi's team actively collaborates with the participants and adapts to their own pace. This ensures that asset managers and technical experts acquire the necessary knowledge efficiently and effectively.
- In the third phase of the training, we teach Rijkswaterstaat employees how to determine how much budget to request for asset maintenance. Understanding the (financial) consequences of not performing (planned) maintenance or delaying it on the performance of the asset and the network is crucial.
- In this way, Delta Pi contributes to the mindless and safe use of the many bridges, tunnels and locks by the inhabitants of the Netherlands.
