At Delta Pi I learned to overcome my barriers

Isah Cohen (27), a Mendix Developer, is the creative mind behind Compass, Delta Pi's asset performance management tool. What does she think of working at Delta Pi? How does she see her future? And that of the company? "If there's one place where you can learn a lot, it's here. Plus, we're a small team, so you don't get overwhelmed."

How did you end up at Delta Pi?

My background is actually in food technology, which is quite different from what I do now. After completing my studies and working in a variety of jobs, my brother came across a Mendix Consultant vacancy. He thought it would be a good fit for me. I had zero experience and no prior qualifications, but Delta Pi offered me an intensive training program and the right guidance. I've been working here for two and a half years now

What exactly do you do at Delta Pi?

Compass is our own asset performance management tool. Within it, I build applications that help companies map and manage their risks and costs. The app offers insightful dashboards and user-friendly interfaces that make our clients' jobs much easier. I build with Mendix, a platform for low-code application development

How unique is Compass for customers?

Many other tools on the market offer standard solutions, but I always tailor the tool to perfectly meet the client's needs. The tool also presents complex data in a very simple way. Clients can quickly see where they can save costs and manage risks. This makes their operational processes much more efficient and helps them make informed decisions

What personal qualities make you good at your job?

I think my ability to think in terms of solutions is one of my greatest strengths. In my work as a Mendix Developer, it's important to stay realistic with the client. Not everything is possible, but a lot is, and I do my best to make it happen. This mindset helps me find feasible and effective solutions to our clients' problems. I also enjoy thinking creatively, which is essential for programming. Sometimes things don't work out the way I expected, and then it's important to come up with innovative ideas

What does your development look like within Delta Pi?

At first, I found gaining new experiences quite challenging. I had to overcome a hurdle every time I did something for the first time. For example, the first customer contact, or giving a demo. But the more I did those things, the easier it became. That's a really good feeling. Delta Pi has always guided me well, but you still have to do the last bit yourself. That works for me. My work has made me more confident

If a future colleague starts working here, what can they expect?

Delta Pi is an open organization with a wealth of knowledge among its employees. If there's one place where you can learn a lot, it's here. We're also a small team, so you don't feel overwhelmed. You know everyone. We all meet every other Friday. We discuss project progress, but we also listen to your ideas for improving your own work or helping Delta Pi move forward.

What do you hope to achieve at Delta Pi in the coming years?

"I find it especially important that I'm in the right place and enjoy my work. That's absolutely the case now. I don't have any ambitious goals, but I'm eager to continue developing. Both in my technical skills and in customer contact and advisory meetings. Fortunately, Delta Pi has an open and inquisitive culture, where we all have the opportunity to improve our skills. Even if you're not yet trained for your job, like I was when I arrived, they provide you with the tools and guidance you need. Consider, for example, the Young Delta P(i)rofessional program ."

Which future colleagues fit here?

Flexible and eager to learn people who enjoy collaborating on solutions that truly make a difference for the customer. Diversity in age and background makes our team stronger and future-proof. Why? It provides new insights and prevents us from getting stuck in the same old thinking patterns. Oh, and I'd also love to see more women on board!
