Hans Vis has worked at Delta Pi since 2004 and has become an expert in safety management. He works daily to ensure the safety and reliability of various systems. "Analytical skills are crucial in this profession, as is the ability to maintain an overview and calm," says Hans.
How did you end up at Delta Pi?
After completing my PhD in chemistry, I worked for several years as a researcher at international universities. With a Master's degree in Business Administration as a break, I wanted to do something different and joined Delta Pi in 2004. This "risk-thinking" approach to complex, socially relevant systems has shaped me into a safety manager
What exactly does your work as a safety management specialist entail?
It's essentially a form of risk management where you specifically look at the causes of system failures that can lead to safety problems. These can range from injuries and fatalities to environmental damage and economic losses. My job is to identify, analyze, and help prevent these risks
Why do youlike risk management?
By contributing to safe and reliable systems, I have an impact on the world. I gather information, analyze it, and translate it into understandable and useful advice. Every project involves a lot of puzzling, figuring out the details, and paying attention to how and with whom the results are shared. This process, in which I collaborate with various experts and constantly have to convince and argue, is fascinating to me
How do you know if you aren't missing a puzzle piece?
The trick is to break the whole thing down into blocks and analyze them. Then you bring those sub-blocks together and perform a separate analysis on them. Take the German naval ship I've been working on for seven years, for example. The ship has hundreds of systems, all of which must be safe. Each component must be analyzed separately and then fit back into the bigger picture
How did you master this profession?
"In the beginning, it was a lot of learning by doing. As a junior, I sat next to a senior and learned the ropes. I learned risk analysis techniques and how to compile information into a report. The experience I gained helped me present information not only in detail but also clearly."
What qualities do you need to be successful in your role?
Analytical skills are crucial, as is the ability to maintain a clear overview and remain calm. You must be a good communicator and be able to convince people of your advice. Self-confidence and experience also play a major role, especially because you often have to make decisions that impact the safety and reliability of systems
Can you give an example of a project you are particularly proud of?
"That's the Integrated Safety Dossier for the Amsterdam North-South Metro Line. This project had a lot of prestige and impact. I'm proud of it. Not only because it's in my hometown, but also because of the complexity and challenges it presented."
You also coach juniors. How would they describe you?
As someone you can make progress with. It helps if a junior colleague is coachable. Juniors do the analyses themselves. I review their work and provide feedback, but I let them struggle a bit first. That's how they learn the most. I don't show them anything: they're better off making mistakes and correcting them later
