On September 3rd, our colleague Peter Bakker participated in Stelvio for Life. At 2,758 meters, it's the highest pass in Italy and one of the toughest climbs in cycling.
Personal challenges
"Stelvio for Life was a double challenge for me," says Peter. On the one hand, climbing the Stelvio by road bike had been on Peter's to-do list for years. On the other hand, the goal of Stelvio for Life really resonates with Peter.
Preparing for the trip and the trip itself presented personal challenges. 21 kilometers of climbing (an average gradient of 7.6%) is a challenge. But climbing from 1,300 to almost 2,800 meters is an extra challenge due to the limited oxygen. Fortunately, Peter was able to rack up a good number of kilometers in the Netherlands. Trips to the mountains in the Ardennes and Germany also contributed to his good preparation. During the trip, another element proved to be the biggest challenge: hypothermia. The fog, rain, wind, and cold (it was only 4 degrees Celsius at the summit) didn't deter Peter. Ultimately, Peter conquered the Stelvio in 2 hours and 20 minutes. A fantastic achievement for an even greater goal!

1 million euros for cancer research
The Center for Personalized Cancer Treatment (CPCT) Foundation is aiming to raise €1 million for research into personalized cancer treatment through this walking, running, and cycling event. By building a large database, information is being gathered on how the many different cancer treatment options best work for each individual's DNA-characterized cancer type. The research center's mission is to create the most effective and least harmful treatment for cancer patients. This gives cancer treatment a more personalized touch. Their motto is therefore "Cancer, we are taking it personally.".
With 653 participants, the Stelvio for Life campaign raised a whopping €1.2 million in 2022. The even better news is that this research methodology has been formally accepted by the Health Council. This means the methodology is entering its next phase.
